THE STROKES “BAD DECISIONS” CLIMBING TOP 10 AT ALT RADIO

FIRST ALBUM IN SEVEN YEARS THE NEW ABNORMAL OUT NOW VIA CULT/RCA TO CRITICAL ACCLAIM

THE STROKES

THE STROKES July 24, 2020,  debut a new music video for “Ode To The Mets” directed by Warren Fu, a close friend and longtime collaborator who first worked with the band in 2006. Watch/share HERE. The track is from the band’s latest LP, The New Abnormal, out now via Cult/RCA to critical acclaim—stream HERE

Loosely inspired by a conversation Fu had with vocalist Julian Casablancas about the intro to the television show “Cheers,” the new video is an animated journey through eight distinct chapters—from the prehistoric era, to an abandoned gym, to an underwater New York City—with each chapter executed by different animators curated by Fu. Fu added subtle hints of The Mets’ colors throughout the video and a few Easter eggs as a nod to the song’s overarching themes of hope and promise, such as a banner that reads “Class of ‘69” (the year The Mets won the World Series over the Baltimore Orioles) and an early photo of the band from guitarist Nick Valensi’s private collection that can be seen in the background. “Yet when you see them in the context of the past without people there, it takes on a more nostalgic, bittersweet feeling,” Fu says.

The band’s new album The New Abnormal, their first in seven years, was released in April to widespread critical acclaim. The album’s lead single, “Bad Decisions,” is currently Top 10 at Alternative radio and still climbing, marking the band’s first Alternative Top 10 since 2006 and setting the record for the most time between Alternative Top 10 entries. Upon release, The New Abnormal debuted at #1 on Billboard’s Top Album Sales Chart. The album reached #8 on the Billboard200#1 Current Rock Album#1 Top Current Album#1 Current Alternative Albumand #1 Vinyl Album.

The Times of London praises “The Strokes give us their second masterpiece,” while The New Yorkerraves the album “sounds better to me than almost anything else I’ve listened to this spring.” NPR Music calls The New Abnormal “one of their best,” and Rolling Stone says it’s “their best since the glory days of the early ‘00s.” The Independent praises, “stacked with rolling, streetwise grooves, boldly graffitied onto the chipped paintwork of New York City past,” while Evening Standard says of the album, “Bold comeback is their best in years… Up there with their best work while sounding boldly different from it.

The New Abnormal was recorded at Shangri-La Studios in Malibu and produced by Rick Rubin. The album’s cover artwork is a painting by Jean-Michel BasquiatBird on Money.
